Inspired by the art of Boris Vallejo, Discovery is available in two scales—1/10 for collectible statue fans and 1/24 for miniature painters. Each model comes in STL format with pre-supported and unsupported versions, all test-printed for resin printers.
Painted in 2000, Discovery was originally created to represent the month of September in the Boris Vallejo Fantasy Calendar of 2001 (the first to also feature works by his second wife, Julie Bell).
Themed The Gate in the calendar, Discovery is inspired by The Tech Wizards Saga, written by C.J. Henderson, and more specifically by the book The Tales of Uleena. It portrays Uleena, a determined explorer who, along with her companions, ventures through dangerous territories in search of The Citadel—a legendary place said to hold the secrets of an ancient power capable of shifting the balance between magic and technology.
In 2011, Yamato Toys USA (now defunct) released a PVC statue based on the illustration for its Fantasy Figures line. Standing approximately 11.50 in tall and sculpted by Erick Sosa, the statue was marketed for around $290.
