Conan vs Set was originally created by Earl Norem as the cover art for The Savage Sword of Conan #46 (Marvel, 1979). This breathtaking watercolor painting captures an epic moment of high fantasy: the mighty barbarian Conan locked in fierce combat with a colossal serpent, while a sorcerer watches with malevolent intent and a helpless woman lies in peril. The composition embodies the classic elements that define the sword and sorcery genre—bravery, danger, mysticism, and raw, visceral energy.
In a 2005 interview, Norem reflected on the changing landscape of commercial art. He lamented that most of his contacts in the industry were either retired or deceased, and expressed doubt that younger art buyers would show interest in the work of an 81-year-old illustrator.
Yet, 16 years later, that very same painting—which inspired the sculpture we proudly present to you today—was auctioned by Heritage Auctions on April 2, 2021, for an impressive $19,200. The sale stands as a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of Norem’s art and its lasting impact on fans, collectors, and admirers of fantasy illustration worldwide.
