Fiona Staples is a Canadian comic book artist best known for co-creating the award-winning series Saga with writer Brian K. Vaughan. Born in Calgary, Alberta, she began her professional career in 2005 with the comic short “Amphibious Nightmare,” and soon moved on to illustrate Done to Death (2006) with writer Andrew Foley. Over the next few years, she contributed to a range of titles including Trick ‘r Treat from WildStorm and The Secret History of the Authority: Hawksmoor. Staples’s breakout moment came in 2012 with the launch of Saga, published by Image Comics. As co-owner and principal artist of the series, she designed everything from characters and creatures to alien technology, earning widespread acclaim for her bold, distinctive aesthetic.
Saga quickly became a critical and commercial success, praised for its emotional depth and visual innovation. Staples was instrumental in shaping its identity, not only through art but also by hand-lettering narration and painting its covers. Her work helped the series win multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. In 2015, she joined Mark Waid to revamp Archie for its 75th anniversary, giving the beloved character a fresh, contemporary look that resonated with a new generation. Throughout her career, she has been celebrated for her storytelling ability, expressive character designs, and the emotional clarity of her compositions, cementing her status as one of the most influential comic artists of her time.
Known for her digital-first approach, Fiona Staples blends traditional drawing techniques with modern software in a process she describes as fluid and experimental. Although she began her career scanning traditional sketches, she now works almost entirely digitally, using Manga Studio for inking and Photoshop for coloring. Staples starts with hand-drawn thumbnails on printed templates, which are scanned and refined digitally. Instead of detailed pencils, she prefers to make corrections on the fly, finding repetition boring and inefficient. Her use of flat color tones for characters adds readability, while her rich, painted backgrounds are inspired by real-world locations, video games, and Japanese animation.
Staples also hand-letters narration in Saga using her own handwriting, adding a personal, organic touch to the storytelling. Her dislike for drawing machinery has influenced the series’ world-building, with technology often designed as natural, flowing forms—such as the now-iconic wooden rocket ship. She frequently uses photo references to pose figures but rarely during the early stages. Although her original art is entirely digital—something that occasionally disappoints collectors—her work has helped redefine how digital tools are used in comics. Despite her prominence, she maintains a low public profile, focusing instead on her craft. In 2015, readers of Comic Book Resources voted her the #1 female comic book artist of all time, a reflection of both her technical mastery and creative influence.
